Why is the word "reincarnation" not mentioned in the Bible?

The word "reincarnation" comes from the mixture of two Latin words: the prefix "re=to repeat, again" and the femenine sustantive "caro, carnis=flesh". And although it does not appear as such in the Scriptures, the meaning of reincarnation is certainly there, in many verses; in John 3 for example, the notion to return, to be again in the flesh, in a body (reincarnation), is mentioned by Jesus Christ, and to further clarify this, He states there that, in order to do this, man should be born again. The liberal interpretation of this passage assuming that He was referring to a "spiritual" birth, is denied by the very words of the Lord, right there: "

Is it reincarnation the same as transmigration of the soul (metempsychosis)?

Reincarnation pertains to the spirit, not the soul. The misreading of the original texts leads many to believe that "soul" and "spirit" are the same, and they are not. The problem originated since the very first translation of the Hebrew texts into Greek; at that time in history, the Greek language lacked of different terms to describe "nephesh" (the Hebrew word for soul) and "rowah" [spirit in Hebrew], therefore the translators of the Septuagint used the same word "psyche" to describe both different terms.

Is there a proof of the existence of reincarnation?

Yes, and increbidly enough, in modern times reincarnation could be proved both in the spiritual and in the science fields. In the New Testament we can read about the reincarnation of the spirit of Elijah into John the Baptist. And that this is not a metaphor is proven by the very words of Jesus Christ in Matthew 14:14. And from a scientific point of view look at Reincarnation and Human Science to see what advanced science has found regarding past lives and reincarnation.

They told me in Sunday school that the belief in reincarnation is heresy!

The characterization of the law of reincarnation as heresy was decided not by the early fathers of the church or by the disciples, let alone the Lord Himself. It was decided by the Roman emperor Justinian as late as the 5th century, who had strong political reasons to anatemize reincarnation. It has nothing to do with doctrinal issues; the amazing thing is that up until this day, Western religions still treat reincarnation as something heretic. Truth is that there is not a single denial or rebuttal of the concept of reincarnation in the Bible.

Paul said in Hebrews 9:27 that "it is appointed unto men once to die"

Many quote this verse of the Bible, taking it as Paul's denial that reincarnation is even possible. The misreading of this verse comes from a common mistake, made while translating the original text in Greek to Latin and from there passed to all versions that took the Latin Vulgate as source. The problem starts with the Greek syntax which has the word "once" before the subject "men" so instead of translated in the way that you read in your Vulgata's inspired Bible (yes, your KJV use it as it main source), it should read: "It is appointed once men die", and it does not relate to the possibility or not of reincarnation... Otherwise, we must believe then that the son of the Ebionite woman, Lazarus and the young girl that Jesus resucitated should all be alive today... since they already died - that's why the needed to be resucitated, isn't?- and considering that there is not other possible death, then they stood arose to live forever... ???

Jesus did not spoke of reincarnation, did He?

Yes, in fact, he did. Read please all the verses in which the Lord refers to John the Baptist as been Elijah. And if after reading this you still do not admit that John was in fact, the reincarnation of the spirit of Elijah ... well, you just joined the group of persons that are still waiting for the arrival of Israel's Messiah which was to be foreran by the return of Elijah. If John was not Elijah, then you are in fact you are in agreement that the Messiah hasn't come yet. If not explained by reincarnation, how could a faithful Christian accept that the prophesy of the return of Elijah, previously to the arrival of the Messiah, was fulfilled?

If there is reincarnation, why can't we then recall memories of past lives?

Because the one that reincarnates is the spirit, the essence in the human being, not the brain or the soul. Here is where the wrong assumption that the soul reincarnates misleads many. And the fact that the flesh does not remember details or things pertaining a past existence of the spirit is due that was this the one that lived thru that other life, not the former. As explained before, reincarnation pertains to the spirit (the essence), not the soul (the substance).

Where is the logic or the need for reincarnation?

If there is no reincarnation, then God's love and forgiveness are both not unlimited, it has a limit, our sins. But if, as Jesus stated and John confirmed, God's love is endless and limitless, there should be a way in which the spirit can erase all his wrongdoings and errors. And that way seems to be reincarnation.

Is reincarnation a universal law?

If by universal you refer to this and other material universes, then yes, reincarnation is a universal law, although there many other kinds of universes, where there is no matter or flesh as we know it. In those universes, incarnation and reincarnation (the spirit into a flesh body) have no sense since there are no material bodies, though the concept of the spirit being provided with the necessary chances and means to evolve and progress is present and constant in all universes.

Where did the concept of reincarnation came from?

The concept of reincarnation seems to have emerged very early in humn development. Just as still remains unexplainable by the current thories on human evolution, the fact that how in such a short period of time, our ancestors begun to take account of time, as well as they begun to bury their dead and to manifest artistic expressions (the human "animal" is the only one of the species to do all this), human science does not have the answer as when or where exactly the concept of reincarnation started. But the notion or concept of reincarnation surely has been around for quite some time now, probably during the past 15,000 years.

If reincarnation is an opportunity, to how many reincarnations am I entitled to?

As many as you need. If reincarnation exists as a manifestation of the divine love and forgiveness, not having those any limits, then there are no limits in the number of the opportunity that each reincarnation represents.

Does the law of reincarnation apply to animals?

As explained before, reincarnation pertains only to the spirit, not the mind or sould. Therefore, to answer that question, first we must discuss whether animals have spirit or not. Please, take in account that spirit is different from soul (see Spirit and Soul: A Crucial Difference). Of course, many animals which are considered to be in the higher top of the evolution scale, manifest beautiful sentiments and emotions, they have precious souls and they show it, but these alone do not prove the existence of the spirit in our beloved pets.
