Personality and Our Real SelfMaybe you have never realized where does the word "personality" come from... Of course, anyone could easily see that it comes from the word "person"... and sure it is! but, which is its real meaning? According to traditional etymology, "person" comes from the Latin "personare", that means to resonate, in reference to the mask that the actors used in the ancient Greek theater back then. That mask had an orifice at the height of the mouth giving the voice a vibrant and penetrating sound; from there it comes "per sonare", to sound through some mean or to resonate. So, person means 'mask', 'rol or personage that an actor plays'. Saying it in another way, the persona and of course, the personality, is nothing more than a facade... yes, a fachade that hides the true human being behind it. And indeed, we all now that everyone builds his/her personality as he/she sees fit: thus, while some "persons" practice before a mirror the angle, the hair style, the clothing or facial expressions which they feel suit them better, others rehearse different entonements for their voice until it reflectes what, in their opinion, is the best version of themselves... in other words, we are looking for our best and most atractive disguise. At the end, every personality is nothing else than an design, a mask. Our true self is then covered, disguised, hidden by that mask, by that facade.
"Your human personality always provides
the means of evading the wise voice that
speaks in every man."
"Control your ego with energy; do not be
so concerned about your name and your
person. Forget about yourselves
altogether so as to think only of the
Father and of your brethren."
"Forget about yourselves"... How opposed are the divine
teachings of all eras to the egotists concepts so
fashionable these days, and that are repeated over and over
again in all the media! But that is topic of yet another
issue of our newsletter...
Our true inner self manifests through character, word that curiosly enough comes from the Latin "character" which was the word used to describe an instrument of color ink used to mark something; in other words, everything that marks us, that defines us and gives us a determined structure of attributes is the character. This is to say, the character individualises us, distinguishes or differentiates us from one another.
"What you call character is nothing else
than the manifestation of your spirit
through your human side, because in your
character is where thought, sentiment,
word and action are found."
"Character pertains to the spirit, and
God has came to forge, to strenghten and
to polish it with trials and tests, with
lessons, some of them profound, some
simple, some of them gratifying to the
heart, some others hard to endure, but
all of them advantegeous, since they all
have the finality to shape your spirit
in perfection."
"The Lord shall put in your path the
ocassions where you should put into
practice all which you are hearing and
learning, and this will happen even more
after the departure of the word of the
Lord and of His spiritual world of
light"
"Then, you must be much more careful
with your deeds, with your words,
thoughts and feelings".
"By that time your character should have
achieved an advance that allows it to
remain always serene, either in the
midst of joy as in pain, either in
victory or in defeat."
Under this point of view, it is smart and wise to use our
time and efforts to build our character, rather than our
personality.
